Emilio Aguinaldo Biography: Full Name, Age, Cause of Death
Among the most influential people in Philippine history, Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy deserves special recognition. Spanish colonial power moulded his formative years in Cavite Viejo (now Kawit), Cavite province, where he was born on March 22, 1869. Aguinaldo, a young man influenced by José Rizal’s bravery and the growing sense of Filipino nationalism, would go on to lead the Philippine Revolution and cement his place in history as a hero of independence movements across the globe.
Early Life and Rise to Power
Aguinaldo was born into a middle-class family with roots in the principality. Carlos Aguinaldo instilled in young Emilio a feeling of civic obligation and an understanding of governance during his time as gobernadorcillo. He was already elected capitan municipal of his community by the time he was 22 years old. But what really sparked Andrés Bonifacio’s political consciousness was the Katipunan, the secret club he belonged to. When Bonifacio was controversially executed in 1897, Aguinaldo took over as revolutionary government head and that same year negotiated the Pact of Biak-na-Bato, a short truce that showed his ambition and pragmatism.
Proclamation of Independence
On June 12, 1898, from the balcony of his ancestral home in Kawit, Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spain. Draped in the new flag, he proclaimed: “Ladies and gentlemen, the Philippine archipelago is now an independent republic.” This momentous event, though unrecognized by Spain or the United States, cemented Aguinaldo’s place as the country’s first president of the Revolutionary Government. His leadership, however, would soon face fresh challenges as colonial interests shifted from Madrid to Washington.
Later Years and Political Life
After the Philippine–American War (1899–1902), Aguinaldo was captured by U.S. forces in 1901. Pledging allegiance to the United States, he retired from active resistance but remained politically active, advocating for Filipino self-governance. He served in various civil offices under the American colonial regime and later in the Commonwealth government. Though sidelined by younger leaders, his voice continued to influence nationalist discourse until his final years.

Emilio Aguinaldo was 94 years old when he died on February 6, 1964. Coronary thrombosis was the cause of his death, which came after a string of health problems common among people in their twilight years.
